About the “Getting a Job in PR” Podcast
Getting a Job in PR (podcast) is a live experiment about how people break into strategic communications today.
Agencies keep saying the same thing. New hires take too long to get up to speed and lack what they need when applying.
So this podcast asks these questions….
“What really gets someone hired in PR in 2025, what makes them a standout newcomer in the office in the first year, and how fast can you teach someone the things they need to become that perfect applicant?“
To find out, we speak with agencies, comms employers and recruiters about what they want from newcomers. Then we test those ideas in real time through a small set of case studies and small coaching groups.
Everything we learn is shared here, so that anyone trying to get into PR can use it.
What the podcast is about
Real employers, real applicants, real attempts
We ask people hiring in PR what skills matter today, what is missing and what makes someone stand out. We’re not after generalised reports, we’re after specifics.
We then try every technique we can find to help teach that to a small case study group. We want to see if we can make them the perfect application.
As we test these ideas we’ll follow the progress in each episode as they learn those skills, apply for roles and face the realities of the first year.
No hacks. No shortcuts. We’re seeing if we can create the next generation of good professionals
Shortcuts get people fired.
We do indeed look at how to open the door in the show, but we also look at how to stay once you get inside.
That means building the real-world mindset, judgment and practical capabilities that communications companies need, not short-term hacks that leave employers frustrated and new employees fired.
Teaching comms faster
We’re also interested in how you can learn the comms mindset quicker.
There are plenty of textbooks out there, but if knowledge is all you need, everyone should be great at it.
We think the missing link is how people learn. There are a lot of talented people out there who, with the right approach, could be amazing in communications.
So, we’re testing all sorts of learning ideas and techniques (pedagogy) from experimental approaches to traditional approaches and optimising it as we go along based on what gets people into work (SoTL).
When something genuinely helps people learn faster, we’ll share it in the show to help you or the people you teach to learn faster.
Critical Practitioners
We believe the ultimate comms pro is a “Critical Practioner”. That’s someone who both do and think.
There are a lot of people trying to enter comms who are one or the other.
Our goal is to create critical thinkers who can analyse and dissect things while also being great at pressing the buttons that make things happen as we move into the new era of AI.
Our goals
- Find out what modern agencies and comms teams really want from new hires
- Test how to teach those skills at accelerated rates
- Share what we find in plain, clear language
- Build a transparent, research-led model of how people get into PR in the AI era
- Help listeners go from “interested” to “job ready”
- Contribute insights to the industry and education
