How would you like to get involved?
Case Studies
Case Studies
What is it: a small, exclusive test group for the research
Take part in the study that helps inform the whole lab.
We’ll be following your progress and sharing occasional ideas from our research to see whether they actually work.
All we need you to do is report back on your progress. Did the idea make a difference, or did you spot something else?
There is no fee to take part, as you are helping us develop our research.
Our goal is simple: to work out what it takes to develop the next wave of elite communications professionals who can contribute to the industry at another level compared to most candidates and become the next wave of industry leaders, either in agencies or by developing their own businesses.
What this is
- A small (free) experimental research group
- We’ll be testing the ideas from our research in different ways. We may have online meetings, send emails with ideas to try, or share exercises to test, but there is no formal structure.
- When podcast guests identify skill gaps, we may invite you to take part in short training sessions (free) to learn ideas you can try out and report back on.
- We expect the case study will last around 6 months, including once you are in work, as we really want to study those initial phases too. If you are able to offer great insights, we may extend it.
Please remember: This is not
- A formal course with a clear structure
- A guaranteed job pathway programme
- A mentoring or therapy programme. We don’t provide “support” or backup. We provide ideas, but there’s no one-on-one guidance.
- We make no promises
- We can’t promise equal attention or fixed progression
- This is not a charged or fee-based “course”.
How it works
- Insights from podcast interviews are brought into the group
- Participants try specific ideas or approaches in the real world to see what works
- We check in as a group every one to two weeks
- The focus is on what actually happened, not what should have happened. Wins, failures, confusion, and surprises all matter equally. Sometimes a technique works immediately. Sometimes it falls flat. Both are useful.
- We then compile these anonymously and report back on them in the book, in the articles we’re writing, and in the podcast. We never mention your name and deliberately avoid clues that could give that away.
- All our research is based on your anonymity. We will share your name and activities publicly only with your express permission, and not under any other circumstances.
Who is right for this…
Either….
- You need to be actively seeking work in the comms/PR industry or in your first 1-2 years in comms.
- You need to have finished all your academic studies (e.g. not currently at University)
- There is no limit on age or background; indeed, we’re keen to study people from every background. P.S. The comms industry is crying out for you.
- There is no limit on the area of comms you are interested in, from B2B lobbying to luxury brands to niche products or ideas, in-house or consumer-facing.
What we need from you, if you want to take part
We ask that you
- Share what you attempt and what happens
- Share what works and what doesn’t
- Understand that this is a research experiment, not a service
- Understand that your experiences will be used to help us write a book and articles, and to provide content for the podcast to help answer our key research question, BUT you will not be mentioned by name unless you explicitly give your permission.
- Commit to take part. We expect people to come and go. You can leave at any time you like. We can also end the project at any time or end your involvement, too. If you’re unable to take part for several weeks, we’ll need to replace your spot with someone from the waiting list to keep the project going.
- Understand that the whole structure might change suddenly as we learn new things. We aim to find the best ways rather than repeat ideas that are not working.
Use of material
If you would like to take part, we’ll need you to consent to our using your stories (anonymously) in the podcast, book, or related writing. It’s important to remember that we will never identify you unless you and we agree that people really should know about something that happened, and you want to associate your name with it.
In short, we will document your experiences (anonymously), and in return, we’ll share what we are hearing and ask you to try it and see if it works.
Important boundaries for the sake of clarity
This group is unpaid and non-commercial. It’s all about research and trying ideas. This is not a course.
If you are not someone who enjoys experimentation and you are looking for something more structured, that work will happen in our course programme we are developing now. If that sounds like a better fit, head here.
How to apply
Places are intentionally limited. That is not some marketing speak; it’s because we need to focus on a few people. We review who is involved on a rolling basis to keep the research coming in, too.
If you would like to be considered, tell us a little about where you are now and why you are interested in taking part. Then, as soon as we have an opportunity to get involved, we’ll reach back.

The 6-week Quick Start Programme

The 6-week course
Six weeks to become the kind of PR/comms candidate employers want to hire
An intensive, practical programme that teaches you what we’ve learnt through our research and gets you doing it, helping you become someone comms employers actually want to hire.
This is a highly practical course where you’ll do the things employers expect to see. You’ll be pushed to learn the skills they are looking for quickly, while being encouraged and guided towards becoming one of the next generation of elite comms professionals.
Who is it for?
People who have…
- Finished all formal education, or left education to pursue work.
- Career changers
- People who have read the advice online/AI and need help actually executing it and making it work.
The type of people who will benefit…
- People who love a challenge
- People who like to be pushed
- People who are determined to make their career choice work
Why?
Since starting this research lab, we’ve been asked to turn it into a more formal programme, so here it is.
We’re developing an intensive six-week programme designed to turn you into the kind of PR/comms candidate employers actually want to hire.
This is not six weeks of career advice or generic online/AI advice. You’ll learn and practise what agencies tell us privately that strong candidates need. These are the things they tell us after the normal public podcast recording stops. You’ll experience live simulations, training and scenarios built around situations employers want you to be able to handle, so you can demonstrate those abilities in interviews and use them in the job. At the same time, you’ll be building your CV and actively looking for work.
The programme combines group mentoring, training, and, crucially, external activities that you’ll be expected to complete over the programme as you actively apply for work and develop skills.
Who can apply?
- You must have completed your formal education and not currently be studying. Without that foundation, you may not yet have the skills or time needed to get the most from the programme.
- You can be any age or at any stage, including career changers and people newly searching for work.
What it is
- An intense, industry-driven programme designed to help the next wave of elite comms professionals gain the skills and approach needed to be not just noticed but to succeed when they get in the door. We want to develop the next wave of comms pros, geared up for the AI era, whether they want to work in-house, for an agency, or even develop their own business in future.
What this is not
- This is not an alternative to university study.
- It is not a guaranteed job scheme.
- It is not something you can do by just turning up and listening. There will be a lot of external work that will push you hard as you build out your CV fast.
- It is not a gentle course where others think for you.
- There are no qualifications or credits. Success is measured in your success.
Who this is for
- If you have the mindset, the determination, the willingness to think differently and push yourself, then this is for you.
- Don’t worry if you lack confidence or direction, are young or confused. All that can be taught. All you need is determination to learn fast in a practical way.
- This is for people with ideas of how to do comms better. This is not for people who just want a “job”.
Is this part of the case study group?
- They are completely separate. The case study group is an unstructured research experiment with no clear programme or structure.
What’s included
- Group sessions
Fortnightly live group training sessions, feedback and mission giving. - Practical missions
You’ll be given tasks to complete that agencies say they want to see. - A supportive environment
We can’t guarantee a result, but we can guarantee encouragement and a supportive environment. - Support
Written questions can be submitted once a week to the programme leads, and you’ll receive a video or audio response.
What we expect from you
You do not need to be polished, have a clear direction or be confident. You do need to be serious about working in communications and willing to do whatever it takes to get there.
We ask that you
- Show up to sessions as consistently as you can
- Attempt the practical work between sessions
- Share honestly what is working and what is not
- Respect the group and contribute to its momentum
This is a collaborative environment. Progress comes from participation.
Important boundaries
This group provides structure, teaching, and guidance. It does not provide job guarantees, placements, internships or personal representation to employers.
This is a paid course. For that reason, you can’t be in the case study group and the programme at the same time, but you can move between them (if there is space).
Optional extras
We’re not able to provide one-on-ones as part of this, but we know some people value them. If you would like to book a one-on-one session, please reach out to us to discuss fees and outcomes.
Applying to join
If you would like to be considered for the programme, tell us a little about where you are now and your goals. We will then share more details as soon as opportunities arise, so you can decide whether it feels like the right fit.
